Breastfeeding can be such a special experience — but sometimes that early feeling of fullness or mild milk stagnation can be uncomfortable. As a licensed TCM practitioner and a mom, I’ve created a gentle herbal decoction I turn to in these moments: my Milk Flow Support Decoction. It’s designed to ease discomfort, support smooth milk flow, and gently nourish the body.

Ingredients & Dosage

  • 大枣 (Da Zao) – 3 pieces, split and pitted

  • 路路通 (Lu Lu Tong) – 5 g, lightly crushed

  • 通草 (Tong Cao) – 10 g, tied in a small tea bag or cheesecloth

  • Water – 1000 ml

Why This Decoction Helps

Each herb in this blend has a specific role: some support milk flow, some nourish your body, and some help relieve mild fullness. Together, they create a gentle, balanced formula that’s easy on the system and comforting to sip.

The Ingredients and Their Benefits

  • 大枣 (Da Zao) – Sweet and nourishing, it supports energy and blood while keeping the decoction gentle on the stomach.

  • 路路通 (Lu Lu Tong) – Tiny but powerful, it helps stimulate milk flow and ease early fullness.

  • 通草 (Tong Cao) – Light and airy, it helps clear heat and gently support lactation.

Personal Tips for Making the Decoction

  • Da Zao: Split and remove the pits before simmering to release more sweetness and make the drink smooth.

  • Lu Lu Tong: Lightly crush the fruits to help release their benefits faster.

  • Tong Cao: Tie in a small cheesecloth or tea bag for a clear decoction and easier cleanup.

How to Prepare

  1. Wash and prepare your herbs.

  2. Add them to a pot with 1000 ml of water.

  3. Bring to a boil, then simmer gently for 20–30 minutes.

  4. Strain and enjoy warm.

Cautions / Safety Notes

  • 大枣 (Da Zao): May not be ideal if you tend to feel bloated, constipated, or eat a lot of sweets.

  • 路路通 (Lu Lu Tong): Avoid if you’re very weak, exhausted, or running a fever.

  • 通草 (Tong Cao): Use carefully if you have low milk supply, feel very cold, or have a breast infection (mastitis).

A Practitioner + Mom Perspective

Being a mom has shown me how much thoughtful attention can make a difference. Every small detail — how the herbs are prepared, the way the decoction is simmered, and how it’s sipped — affects both comfort and effectiveness.

Every needle, every herbal recommendation, and every moment in the room is tailored thoughtfully — because safe, effective care comes from noticing what matters.
