Starting acupuncture for the first time can feel exciting — and a little mysterious. At Acu Hour, we want you to feel confident and comfortable walking in the door. This post will walk you through what to expect during your first appointment and how to prepare so you can get the most out of your treatment.
1. Before Your Appointment: How to Prepare
Wear comfortable clothing — Loose, breathable clothing allows easy access to areas where acupuncture needles will be placed. In addition, a light and breathable kimono will also be provided for you to change into for more easy access to areas that will be worked on.
Avoid heavy meals or caffeine right before — You want to feel relaxed, not jittery or overly full.
Bring any relevant health information — This can include a list of medications, recent health changes, or previous treatments.
Prepare questions — Write down any concerns you have so we can address them during your session.
2. What to Expect During Your First Visit
Intake & Consultation — We will start by discussing your health history, current concerns, and overall lifestyle. You can also expect a few questions rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine — things like your sleep, digestion, or energy patterns — to help guide a more complete assessment.
Physical Assessment — This may include checking your pulse and tongue as part of Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnosis.
Treatment Session — You’ll lie on a comfortable treatment table while thin, single-use, sterile needles are gently placed in specific points. Most people feel minimal discomfort.
Relaxation Time — Treatments typically last between 20-30 minutes, during which you may feel deeply relaxed.
Total Duration— From beginning with the initial consultation, preparations, to the actual treatment, and finally to removing the needles and getting dressed— the total duration of your first session can be expected to be around 50-60 minutes.
3. After Your Appointment
Mild Sensations Are Normal — You might feel relaxed, energized, or even slightly tired after your session.
Drink Water & Rest — Staying hydrated helps your body integrate the treatment.
Notice Changes — Pay attention to how your body feels in the days following your session. Some benefits may be immediate, while others appear gradually.
4. Tips for the Best Results
Attend your appointments consistently, especially at the start of your treatment plan.
Combine acupuncture with healthy habits like proper sleep, balanced nutrition, and gentle movement.
Communicate openly with your practitioner about your progress.
Your first acupuncture session is a step toward balance, healing, and a deeper connection to your body. At Acu Hour, we’re here to guide you through every step of your wellness journey.
